Dungeon Juice is a small turn based roguelike in the Brogue tradition, made for Roguetemple's Fortnight 2 jam.

You start in the rain at the edge of a forest. A trail leads to a cave in the cliff, and below it lies Karak Jus, a warren of old halls and delvings.

The dark dwarves who cut Karak Jus were an honest folk once, and they still work the forges in the deep halls. Above them, goblins have staked out camps in the wet caves, and kobolds have strung snares through the old mine tunnels. Somewhere in between, something heavy has been breaking through the walls. And far below lies the Amulet of Yendor. Its voice drove the dwarves mad once, and now it's calling for you...

PROGRESSION IS IN THE ITEMS

There are no player levels and no experience. You have five slots. A weapon, armor, two trinkets and a staff. Each item you wear gives you an ability, active or passive, and your weapon decides how you hit when you bump into enemies. Picking up an item swaps it for what you had in that slot. Potions are drunk on the spot. Stand on a shrine and spend gold to enchant a slot. Rarer items hold more enchantments. And maybe you will find the forge of the evil dark dwarves useful as well.

THE BOSSES

Six bosses live in the middle floors, and a run meets at most two of them. Each has its own lair and fights in stages. You will have to meet them to figure out how they will seal your doom.

At the bottom, in a hall of lava, waits Kalixtha, the Ember Mother. She holds the Amulet of Yendor. Defeat her, and the amulet will be yours!

HOW TO PLAY

The game plays fully with keyboard, mouse, or a gamepad. Hover anything on screen for a tooltip.

Keyboard

  • Move with the arrow keys, WASD or the numpad. Q, E, Z and C move diagonally. Hold a key to keep walking.
  • Attack by walking into an enemy. F always attacks with your weapon.
  • Press 1 to 4 to use the ability in that slot.
  • Tab targets the next enemy and Shift+Tab the previous one. Ranged abilities fire at your target.
  • Press Enter, Space or G to pick up what is at your feet, or to pull a lever.
  • Press period or numpad 5 to wait a turn. Hold it to keep waiting.
  • Press X to explore automatically. It collects coins, uncovers the floor, and stops when an enemy comes into view.
  • Press V to close the door beside you.
  • Stand on a shrine and press 1 to 5 to spend gold on that slot. 5 is your coat.
  • Escape pauses the game and opens the settings. In the pause menu, Q abandons the run and Shift+Q quits to desktop.
  • After death, Enter plays again and L reads the chronicle of the run.

Mouse

  • Click a tile to walk to it. The route is drawn before you click.
  • Click an enemy next to you to attack it.
  • Click the tile you are standing on to pick up what is there, or to pull a lever.
  • Right click an enemy to target it. Click a slot in the column on the right to use its ability. Ranged abilities fire at your target.
  • The buttons above the log explore on your own, wait a turn, and close the door beside you.
  • Stand on a shrine and click a slot to spend gold on that slot.
  • The gear above your equipment opens the pause menu. Click a slider to set it, or the arrows either side of it, and the buttons under them resume, abandon the run, or quit.
  • Click the log to read the chronicle of the run. The wheel scrolls it and a click closes it.

Gamepad

  • Hold the left stick toward a neighbouring tile and press A to step there, or to attack what stands there.
  • With the stick released, A picks up what is under you, or pulls a lever.
  • The right stick moves a pointer. A on a far tile walks there. A on a button or a slot presses it.
  • B waits a turn. Hold it to keep waiting. B is also back and no in the menus.
  • Abilities are on the directional pad, clockwise from up. Up is slot 1, right is 2, down is 3, left is 4. Hold to arm the slot and release to use it.
  • RB targets the next enemy and LB the previous one. RT targets the enemy under the pointer.
  • X explores automatically.
  • Stand on a shrine and use the directional pad to spend gold on that slot. Press A to buy enchantments for the armor.
  • Start pauses the game. In the pause menu, X abandons the run and Y quits to desktop.
  • After death, A plays again and Y reads the chronicle.

Very nice vibes and aesthetic, solid gameplay, I really like the explicit DM tension level as a mechanic
